Most Expensive Paintings


A week ago, we wrote the article Most Expensive Sculpture Sells for over $100 Million. If you prefer paintings, and have wondered what the most expensive paintings are, here is a list according to wikipedia.

A painting called No. 5, 1948 by Jackson Pollock, created in 1948, was sold for $140,000,000 in 2006 by David Geffen in a private sale through Sotheby's.

The painting Woman III by Willem de Kooning in 1953 was also sold for $137.5 million in 2006 by David Geffen in another private sale.

The painting Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt in 1907 sold for $135 million in 2006 in a private sale through Christie's.


A painting called Portrait of Dr. Gachet by Vincent van Gogh in 1890 sold in 1990 for $82.5 million at a Christie's auction.

The painting Bal du moulin de la Galette by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1876 sold for $78.1 million in 1990 at a Sotheby's auction.
