Now You Can Buy Europe’s Most Expensive Home: Pierre Cardin’s Bubble Palace

Image
Pierre Cardin’s Bubble Palace Pierre Cardin’s Bubble Palace is Europe’s most expensive home and currently for sale at $456 million; featured this week at  TopTenRealEstateDeals.com .  Round houses were the architecture of choice for eons dating back before the Iron Age. They were built in Europe, Africa, Polynesia and almost anywhere humans congregated. In John Hawkesworth’s “The Flame Trees of Thika,” it was duly noted that Afrikaners believed evil spirits would collect and live in the corners of square homes and couldn’t understand the British penchant for residing in square buildings. Mid-century architect Antti Lovag expressed similar feelings when he designed Le Palais Bulles -  the Bubble Palace  - in Cannes, France, which was built between 1975 and 1989. He concluded that “ . . human beings have confined themselves to cubes full of dead ends and angles that impede our movement and break our harmony.”  He went on to say that the...

Why Don't You Buy Cher's 1970's Beverly Hills Mansion?

Image
During  Cher's fifty years  as the Goddess of Pop, there is precious little in the creative world she hasn't accomplished. Starting out her singing career so shy on stage that she had to talk Sonny Bono into standing with her so she could look at him instead of the audience, to branching out as a soloist in the mid 1960s and on to award-winning actress on film, stage and television,  Cher has successfully tested the water in multiple entertainment categories. Having hit their peak record sales in the early 1960s selling over 40 million records, their careers began to nose dive in the late '60s with the advent of hard rock and the surging drug culture. It wasn’t until the early '70s that they experienced a resurge in popularity with Cher's new exotic wardrobe, their hit television show, “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour,” and simultaneously cutting four new albums. However, with their marriage failing, Sonny and Cher divorced in 1975. As a young girl who...

Buy Your Own Gated Rural Town for $1,000,000

Image
It’s not the first time that an entire American town has gone on the auction block, but it might be the most unusual.  Sugar Grove Station , West Virginia was originally a United States Navy military base to support part of the National Security Agency’s surveillance operation. Though the array of giant parabolic dishes that continue to track location and content of international telecommunications activity is still in operation and not part of the sale, they are completely obscured from view behind thick forest on their ridgetop one mile distant. When it became unnecessary to house related analytical staff at the base, it was retired in the fall of 2015 and put up for auction to the highest bidder over $1 million. Built between 1960 and 2014, the fenced and  gated rural town  has private full-service utilities to support as many as 500 people on over 120 acres. Included are 80 homes on tree-lined residential streets in like-new condition, a swimming pool, bowlin...

Fresh from the final airing of American Idol where she has been a fan-favorite judge for five years,  Jennifer Lopez  might be America’s favorite do-it-all singer, dancer and actress since Doris Day was a best-selling recording artist and the #1 box-office star in the 1950s and ‘60s. And, after a hiatus of six years, she just re-signed with Epic Records for a multi-album deal. In the business world, Jennifer has her own production company, clothing line, cell phone company and a best-selling fragrance line. “Jackie Gleason's Final Florida Home” One of the most innovative and popular television entertainers of the 1950s and '60s,  Jackie Gleason, lovingly referred to as Mr. Saturday Night, was born 100 years ago in 1916. His final  Florida home , almost unchanged since he died in 1987, is for sale. “The Jackie Gleason Show,” with the second highest ratings in 1955, was dominated by Jackie who not only was a huge man but with an even larger and brash personality. He never rehearsed with the cast but adlibbed his way through the show making each performance a surprise to his director. His shows consisted of song, flashy dance numbers by The June Taylor Dancers, celebrity guests who enjoyed appearing in his comedy routines and his special characters such as Ralph Kramden in “The Honeymooners” skits. Until 1964, Gleason’s variety show was recorded with live audiences at Studio 50 in New York City. But then a friend told him he could play golf all year in Florida so ...
